I went to 'Thingfo' , but it no longer seems to exist.
'24 Hours at Sundance' fits my style. It looked like a social networking site.
'Blahgirls' was too busy for me.
'The Civil Librarian is easy to follow. The Civil Librarian uses Twitter, Linked-in, and Facebook. Facebook is on the left of the page.
In the blog of 'The Civil Librarian' is a 'tweet'. I like the wheel turning in the tweet.
The photo at the top of my blog, Pictures of Rainbows, is a widget. I got the widget from http://bloggergadgets.net/ .
This exercise was tricky. I had better luck with gadgets on my home computer.

#25 Tweet on Twitter
The Twitter page for Cleveland Public Library attracted me.
Then I looked at two articles. The first article, 'Twitter Explained for Librarians', told me that Twitter is a good place for one to place one's random thoughts. I agree. The second article, 'How Twitter Can Help at Work', introduced me to TinyURL. One can use TinyUrl to shorten the length of a link < http://tinyurl.com/> .
After I signed up for Twitter, I went to 'Suggestions', then clicked the link to follow The New Yorker. When I went to 'Friends', I was unable to hook-up with who I wanted to, but after I went to 'Search', I was able to.
I wanted to paste my first tweet here, but was unable to. Here is my homepage http://twitter.com/vsacto

#24 LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE WITH MANGO
Spanish is the language I chose.
I studied Section 1: Greetings, Gratitude, and Goodbyes.
In Lesson 1 I learned how to say 'How are you?' formally- ¿Comó está usted?; and informally- ¿Comó está tú?
In lesson 2 I learned how to say 'I'm fine. Thank you.' Estoy bien. Gracias.
In lesson 3 I learned how to say: 'You're welcome.' De nada. I also learned how to say 'Have a good day.' Que tenga un buen dia.
I learned that 'cansado' means 'tired'.
This was an enjoyable exercise. It is user friendly.

#23 PERUSE THE NEW SPL SITE
I found Stephenie Meyer's Twilight in three clicks. I entered the title on our home page. I saw the book in Encore when Encore came up. I requested it. A list of branches that had the item came up. I was asked to pick what copy from what branch I wanted. There was no generic 'request' button to click.
The next exercise was to find advice to save money. Here are the steps I took: a) Click Take Charge California; b) Click MoneySmart News; c) Click Smart Investing; d) Scroll down to Articles and Website; e) Click 'Mind Your Money- Framing'. It is a podcast or video with transcript. I printed the transcript.
The article has a little different title than the link I clicked to get to it. The title is 'Your Mind Your Money-Framing'.
Framing is a technique marketers use to present information to the public in such a way that the public will look at the world through the lens that is presented to them. For instance, says the article, 'Is the glass half empty or half full?' 'Is the beef 75% lean or 25% fat?'
In relating this concept to money, stock splits are discussed. When a company splits a stock to increase the number of its stocks, the price per share comes down. However, the total value of the company's shares remains the same. A lot of people think they are getting a deal when they purchase split stocks, but such may not be the case.
The article encourages people to be cautious, but it did not offer enough information on stock splits.

Next I did a medical search. I went to the Knowledge Center Databases, then ended up in 'HEALTH AND WELLNESS RESOURCE CENTER'. I entered 'eyeglasses' in the search directory. A list of articles came up. I clicked 'Eyeglass care.'
The article is by George Mamalis. The periodical is Clinical Reference Systems February 1, 2010 v2010 i1 pNA.
Two items of importance in the article are: 1) Do not leave glasses in a hot car. The frames can lose their shape and the lenses can warp. 2) Use both hands when putting glasses on or taking them off so the glasses stay aligned.
The final search I undertook was Sacramento job resources. I went to Newsbank to find a Sunday edition of The Sacramento Bee to search its Classified adds for jobs. There was no online link for Classifieds in the edition of May 16, 2010.
Next I looked up the Sacramento Business Journal. There is a page that will connect a searcher to a list of 'Sacramento's 100 Largest Private Companies'.

#22 DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS
I used Ingram to download the book The Accidental,by Ali Smith. I listened to the beginning of the book on a staff computer at Central.
The readers of the story are English. The story is set in England.
I love the accents of the readers, but it does not sound like they rehearsed their reading. It sounds like they are reading the story line by line, without having a few lines memorized here-and-there to give occasional looseness to the story.
On April 27 I put the book on hold, then listened to it on the date of return.
The process was tricky for me. I finally found directions that succeeded. Having been offered a choice between Ingram Media Manager for PC and Ingram Media Manager for OS X, I chose the media manager for pc.
I ran the file. As the file downloaded, I listened to the beginning of the story.
Downloading seems like it could be rewarding. One could sit in the living room and look out the window while a story was told from the computer.

PODCASTS #21
This exercise took a long time to figure out.
I went to PodcastAlley and entered 'libraries'. A list of 34 sites came up. One of the sites I liked was 'The Library Channel' from Arizona State University.
Then I decided to explore. I entered 'baseball and history' or some similar topic into PodcastAlley. I went to the site's 'Baseball Historian'.
There is a short audio about 'Casey at the Bat'. The title is "Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic".
At the beginning of the audio is a recording from early in the last century. An actor named Wolf (Wilf?) Hopper began reciting 'Casey at the Bat' in 1888. He recited it over 10,000 times.
His recording is very dramatic. He sounds like an actor in a Shakespeare play. He is gasping- almost crying. The recording is at Baseball Historian 120 Casey at the Bat Episode Baseball Historian. http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podshows/4608330 .

#20 Explore YouTube
At YouTube I entered 'Sacramento History'. There are a lot of choices. I picked 'Green Glory: The Early History of Sacramento Trees'. The video is also available to watch while in the Sacramento Room at the Central Branch of The Sacramento Public Library.
I chose the video because I love trees and because I love the old days and because I love Sacramento. Another reason I chose it is because it is 7:53 long. Most videos are shorter and end too soon for me.
The YouTube site is easy to navigate. A selection of videos came up immediately. There are several pages of links regarding Sacramento History. One video is about low riders. There are many videos about Sacramento History by a former Sacramento City Historian.
One of the things I like about YouTube is there are a lot of graphics on the home page, but the graphics do not clutter the page. What I do not like is that the photographs on the page seem gaudy, juvenile, and sensational.
SPL can use some of the features on our site that YouTube has. One is a video to click and watch regarding the library. Possibilities are a tour of Central or a trip to each of the twenty-seven branches with photographs of the landscaping and the outside and inside of the branch. Something else we can do is to have a link that states what downloadable DVD's from our website are being watched now.
